March 13, 2020
Dear Sparta United Methodist Church Family,
As you can imagine, the circumstances surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) have gotten our attention at the church. We are praying for those affected and for all who are caring for communities around the world.
A few days ago, Governor Whitmer issued a State of Emergency in Michigan, which gives officials access to helpful resources as we anticipate a rise in cases in our area. She also asked that all organizations avoid holding large gatherings. Today, just a few hours ago, our bishop, Bishop Bard, released a statement asking all United Methodist Churches in the Michigan Conference to refrain from holding in-person gatherings for the remainder of March, including worship, Bible studies, and any other meetings.
As a response to our bishop’s request, the Sparta U.M. Church will begin live- streaming our worship service over the internet. It will be more of a devotional than the complete service you’re accustomed to. The livestream will allow the people of our congregation to stay at home and remain connected. To watch our service, all you need to do is visit our Facebook page on Sunday morning at 10:10 a.m. You can connect with your smartphone, laptop, tablet, smart TV, or desktop computer.
For safety sake, we are canceling all church activities beginning today. This situation is very fluid and we do not know how long such measures will be necessary. But we will continue communicating any new information with you. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
Our office will remain open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday on days when volunteers feel comfortable being out in public. If you need assistance call our office at 616-887-8255. Also, please feel free to call (or text) me directly at 616-799-4281.
Grace and Peace, Pastor Phil Friedrick
